Chicago, Chicago is ~ a place I LOVE to visit

A couple of weekends ago I was in Chicago and unfortunately spent almost all my time in hotel rooms and restaurants. I got to see very little of Carl Sandburg’s City of the Big Shoulders. So I’ll share some pictures taken from the Navy Pier on a previous visit.

Sadly one of my favorite places to go in Chicago no longer exists. The Smith Museum of Stained Glass on the Navy Pier closed in 2014 to make way for new retail space. Here’s one of the outstanding examples of stained glass art.

Of course no visit to Chicago would be complete without a few sky scrapers. Fortunately, the Navy Pier is a great place to snap pictures of the city-scape. We’ll start with the iconic Sears Tower looking back from the west side of the pier.SearsTower

Then follow up with the skyline looking back from the east side of the pier,

Oh and by the way buildings aren’t the only things scraping the sky near the pier. Take a look at the masts on this tall ship.016

There are thousands of sights to see and things to do in Chicago. The Navy Pier has some of the best of them.

Back from a Working Vacation

This past week I spent several days in Chicago. While my DH sat in conference sessions all day, I wandered the streets of Chicago doing research for a book. My adventures took me to the Chicago History Museum, the Navy Pier, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

I’d been to the Navy Pier before, so I came prepared with my camera. If you’ve never been to the Pier, you may not know that one of the best attractions is the Smith Museum of Stained Glass. On display are gorgeous examples of some of the finest stained glass ever made. Here are just two examples.

StainedGlass3Chicago2013 StainedGlass2Chicago2013I love the vibrant colors and natural arrangement of the leaves and flowers. I will definitely find a way to put stained glass into the book I set in Chicago.

Please leave a comment and let me know about your vacation.
